Proposals in detail
A new continuous two-way cycle path from Keynsham to the centre of Saltford, partially shared with pedestrians at pinch points where there is limited space.
- This would improve cycling options connecting with Keynsham Rail Station and the High Street and make the segregated cycle route to Bristol more direct and shorter by four miles.
- In Saltford (again due to space) cyclists would be diverted to join the Bristol and Bath Railway path for journeys towards Bath.
A series of local cycling and walking routes would be created to make it easier for people to travel from other locations in Saltford to the new cycle path on the A4.
- These would combine dedicated paths shared between pedestrians and cyclists and what are known as "quiet routes" – designated roads with special road markings, speed restrictions and traffic calming which are safer for cyclists, but not closed to traffic.
- The proposed “quiet routes” are:
- Along a small section of Grange Road (see detailed drawing) and along Manor Road connecting to south Saltford and the primary school (see detailed drawing)
- Along Norman Road and High Street connecting to the Bristol Bath Railway Path See detailed drawings
- From the Globe roundabout to Bath Spa campus
- See section 9 for possible impact on parking
A new one-way bus lane heading towards Bath between Broadmead roundabout (at the edge of Keynsham) and Saltford would be built
- The new bus lane (along with the cycle route and footpath) should be accommodated within what’s called the “highway boundaries” – which is often wider than the existing road and includes grass verges and footpaths
- Very few changes are proposed in Saltford (due to the very limited space available), but some small sections of new bus lane could be created – for example between Manor Road and Uplands Road (towards Bristol) and the road approaching the Globe roundabout (towards Bath), but these need further assessment.
Bus stops along the route would be built to the same standard (subject to space). This could include new shelters where there aren’t any, step-free kerbs and live digital bus information screens.
Improved, wider pavements where possible (subject to space).
Safer road crossings would be considered including a new crossing near the Esso garage.
Traffic signals in Saltford would be reviewed to see if bus and car delays can be reduced.
We are not proposing to make any changes to left or right hand turns for cars in Saltford.
To accommodate the new local cycling and walking paths, if these proposals went ahead there would be no parking:
- On the right-hand side of Manor Road from the A4 (Little Coffee Shop side) to Golf Club Lane. Parking on the other side of the road would be unaffected
- On the left-hand side of Grange Road from the A4 until the junction with Claverton Road
- Around junctions on Norman Road and High Street, as well as near the Bird in Hand pub, to improve visibility
Residents would still be able to access driveways and garages
- Safer, easier and more direct options for cyclists and walkers, especially for students at IKB Academy
- Faster and more reliable buses heading towards both Bath and Bristol
But
- Fewer car parking spaces on some local roads
- Some loss of grass verges as they’re replaced with a new cycle path and pavements
Short sections of bus lane are proposed in Saltford to prioritise buses in key locations
