Proposals in detail

New bus lanes would be created to reduce delays for buses:

  • Approaching the Globe roundabout from Saltford
  • One-way bus lane (heading towards Bath city centre) from Old Newbridge Hill to Hungerford Road (with a short break around Chelsea Road)
    • The length of time it would operate as bus-only (eg during rush hour or longer) needs to be assessed
    • Please see section 7 for possible impact on parking on Newbridge Road

A new bus lane is proposed on Newbridge Road on the way into Bath

Bus stops along the route would be built to the same standard (subject to space). This could include new shelters where there aren’t any, step-free kerbs and live digital bus information screens.

Traffic signals which could detect buses using Newbridge Park & Ride and let them through the lights more quickly.

Dedicated pedestrian and cycle crossings at the Globe roundabout.

Improved paths shared by pedestrians and cyclists:

  • Along Wells Road and Corston Drive linking to Bath Spa University View detailed map
  • Between the Globe roundabout and Newbridge Road junction. Beyond this, cyclists would join the Bristol and Bath Railway Path.

Improved paths shared by pedestrians and cyclists:

  • Cyclists would continue to use the nearby parallel Bristol Bath Railway Path, which would be extended and lit. Various options are being explored – please click here for details in our cycling and walking section.
  • Between the Globe roundabout and Newbridge Road junction.
  • What’s known as a "quiet route" – a road designated for cyclists to use- would be created along Osborne Road and Avondale Road - view detailed map. Please see section 7 for possible impact on Osborne Road.
  • New access points to the Bristol and Bath Railway along Newbridge Road and Upper Bristol Road
  • To accommodate the new bus lane, there would be no parking along Newbridge Road heading towards Bath between Old Newbridge Hill and Chelsea Road. On street parking would remain on the other side of the road and all residents would still be able to access driveways
  • The one-way access to the A4 along the bridge section of Osborne Road would be closed to traffic to reduce vehicles rat-running and speed limits would be reduced.
  • Faster and more reliable buses (particularly heading towards Bath)
  • Safer and easier routes for cyclists, particularly those travelling from Corston and Bath Spa University to join the A4
  • Nicer places to wait for buses
  • Better connections for cyclists

But

  • Fewer car parking spaces along Newbridge Road
